The Weston House Environmental and Sustainability Policy
In the interests of future generations and the welfare of our planet, The Weston House is committed to being a part of a sustainable future.
The Weston House endeavours to carry out the following environmental measures:
Reduce, reuse, recycle. The Weston House will opt for less packaging, print less , turn off- lights, heating, taps. Where ever possible that which we can't reduce we will endeavour to re-use or recycle. Attention will be paid to sourcing goods that fall within this maxim.
Buy locally produced and seasonally fresh food. When ever possible The Weston House will buy locally produced and seasonally fresh (or frozen) produce. Assuming that their guests have traveled to get there doesn't mean their food has to! We make our own jam and our rehabilitated ex-factory hens lay our eggs at Peter & Kates' farm on the hill and our daughter Rebecca's suburban hen house...fed on our food scraps.
Be a part of a sustainable community. The Weston House contributes to several local charities, and is also part of a Business Mentor programme .
Visitors to the Weston House are also encouraged to follow the same practice.
As part of the 'Welcome' package, you are given a string bag( just like Granny used for her shopping) so that you can say 'no' to plastic bags.
Consider the maths here- based on room/nights and saying "no" to just 2 plastic bags a day you have stopped 750 to 1000 bags finding their way to the landfill.
Another way to minimize the impact on the local environment is by refiling water bottles(yes ,we have biodegradable
water bottles) with the best water in the world from the underground aquifers in Canterbury delivered straight to your tap
and tasting of absolutely nothing.
Christchurch water is sooo good and pure that we don't need to add chemicals or process it in any way.
Heating is efficient and not wasted and where appropriate we use energy saving light bulbs - we also have a voluntary bed linen & towel laundry policy
On behalf of our guests The Weston House will make a contribution towards a local 'carbon offset' scheme.
This is work in progress but when released may be taken up by other tourism operators in the Christchurch City area.
Future developments include undergoing a water saving and recycling feasibility study.
The Weston House is proud to be considered a 'tidy kiwi'.
Much that we would like to single-handedly save the Planet- we can't- but we can all contribute a little. With your help we can achieve something.
We do want you to enjoy your stay at The Weston House without sacrificing comfort or service and will congratulate and reward you at Wine O'clock - 6pm in the
Library - every night of your stay
