Enjoy and experience stunning food & wine during your stay at our luxury lodge accommodation in Christchurch, New Zealand (NZ). We are level walking distance to Christchurch's finest restaurants. Top wineries a comfortable 45 minutes drive.
Fine food and wine abounds in New Zealand with the finest wine producing areas being on the East Coast areas of both Islands - from Hawkes Bay in the North Island to Canterbury in the South Island. But we must not forget the Central area of the South Island in areas in and north of Queenstown (Central Otago)
Fine food of course, has no boundaries and you can be assured of a fine coffee where ever you travel and even the humblest of country towns will have a small cafe or two serving a selection of local fare creatively combined and presented.
Celebrate our currency differences (wherever you are from your currency is bound to be stronger than ours!) and pack easy fitting clothes - suitable for enjoying the sights and expanding from your indulgences. It's what New Zealand is famous for.
CANTERBURY FOOD AND WINE ... a local 'must see and do' list.
But here let us concentrate on the specialties of Canterbury because within 1.5 to 2hrs drive of The Weston House you can experience stunning food and wine at local boutique wineries and countless restaurants along the way.
Start your experience in Christchurch at the Arts Centre Market( 5 minutes level walk from The Weston House) - held every weekend summer and winter- lovely foodie shops, international food stalls, fresh local produce and talented people producing world class craft goods.Fridays they hold an organic farmers'market - I always seem to buy more than I need!
Stroll around our local shops and be prepared to be delighted with small delicatessens and wine shops. My personal favourite is Canterbury Cheese Mongers in Salisbury Street and the Cup Cake Parlour next door.
Just across the road are two specialist food shops with temptations galore and great coffee to drink on the premises.
8 minutes away(I walked there today) is Hemmingway's Fine Wines- where Brian and his staff will demystify the wines of New Zealand and arrange shipping worldwide.Don't forget some of our finest wines never make it off shore. We are tiny producers on the world scene but passionate consumers....
Within 10 minutes walk in the evening you can stroll to over 50 restaurants- four of our finest restaurants in Christchurch (actually NZ) are within 5 minutes of us. Hays' specializes in Lamb, Pescatore at The George for seafood, 50 on Park for fine local fare and Chinwag Thai for the best gourmet Thai with a kiwi spin you have ever tasted. There is no worry about drinking and driving when you can walk on our safe local inner city streets.
10 to 15 minutes will have you in the heart of the City where you can dine Al Fresco on The Strip ( our favourite here is The Bangalore Polo Club for decor and amazing food) or prebook and dine at Pedro's - famous for his Spanish fare.So many choices - we recommend the best.
Farmers' Markets abound - Saturday at Riccarton House, and at Lyttleton(our port town).
A trip north to Waipara on a summer Saturday where you can take in the Farmers' market, enjoy wine tasting in the local award winning wineries and /or lunch at most of them.To name a few - Mountford (my favourite Chardonnay) Pegusus Bay for award winning food (Cuisine 2008 - Best Winery Restaurant and again in 2009,2010 ) and the BEST dry Rieisling Mud House Wineries and Waipara Springs for everything else plus lunch.Waipara is famous for Pinot Noir,Riesling,Sav.Blanc and Chardonnay.Pegasus Bay Mud House and Greystones have cellar door tastings and click on this link directions for a short self-guided wine tour you can undertake yourself.
Wine Tours-you can self guide or join a group tour or hire a driver- my advice is to tour or hire a driver - then everyone can relax and enjoy. There is nothing worse than being the designated driver!
20 minutes drive around the outskirts of Christchurch will have you winery hopping to some gorgeous places - a personal favourite is Rossendale Winery & Restaurant- set amongst trees in a restored school house...you won't want to leave.
A day's outing in itself is a visit to Akaroa - famous for scenery, cheese at Barry's Bay , wine at French Farm and food at Akaroa- try lunch at Bully Hayes or Harbour 71- even try the best Fish and Chips on the harbour front- wrapped in paper.A slice of heaven.
Anne & Stephanie ordered the Fish & Chips -Ian ( Anne's Husband) looks on regretfully ... (sorry about the position of the bottle Ian -but that's the candid camera shot for you! ) Oh - the beer was great too!
.. AT LAST - THE WESTON HOUSE FOOD AND WINE
Now that I have convinced you to come to Christchurch ...let me tell you what we have in store at The Weston House.
Well first there is the breakfast... a selection of seasonal specialties - sometimes we have to switch suppliers but wherever possible we source locally.
Fresh fruit from local producers...
Cereals for the diet conscious and cereals for the not so diet conscious.
Homemade jams and local honey
Croissants or Brioche made by our French son- in -law, Pascal
Fresh eggs from Stephanie's Hens at Kate & Peter's farm( these are rescued hens from commercial producers- ending their days in peace and happiness and fed on our suitable food scraps -just as they were in Grandma's day!)...plus we get an extra supply from Calix - our Grandson. He is 27 months old and lets us have the brown or white eggs - he keeps the blue ones from the Lavender Araucanas for himself (Sth American Hens imported into NZ in the 19th Century...but you knew that!) Those are the eggs on the photos above...
The little egg collector himself - just click on the photo below for a short video clip - I like to think it is 'Just one egg today' but I'm Granny so he is already famous to me...
Local honey cured bacon
Akaroa Smoked Salmon
Mushrooms from Marshlands Road.
Rebecca's Bread (our daughter)...our grandson makes delightful noises but isn't into food production yet.
All or any of these ingredients can be whipped up into your choice of combinations ... no fancy named dishes here..but smoked salmon and scrambled eggs (secret recipe- but if you stay I'll tell you) ,Eggs Benedict (like no other) or salmon and brie omelette are all there to tempt you.We serve a breakfast to get you through the day.
"Thankyou for two memorable and enjoyable stays. The Eggs Benedict are unforgettable"
Dawn & Michael Allen, Sudbury, England
Now for the best part of your stay
WINE O'CLOCK......6.00pm every night at The Weston House.
Enjoy a glass or two (or three - Len is known for his generous pouring) of the finest NZ has on offer. We are dedicated wine drinkers and feel it is our duty to taste and choose on your behalf- be prepared to enjoy yourselves. It's the best part of our day and if you listen to our guests - it's their favourite memory of The Weston House
"We are ensuring that 'Wine O'Clock' is observed although I have to say that NZ Cab.Sav. from Sainsbury's does not have the same credence. We'll have to make a point to get to Waitrose to try theirs!" Anne & Ian Love - England.
...and finally just a little tempter for the calendar

November - Culverden Country Fair (80minutes North of Christchurch)
November - Mandalay Country Fair (50 minutes east on the way to Akaroa- close to Little River)

June - Project Lyttelton Winter Festival of Lights 2011. Lyttelton, Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand
...for Rugby fans (I know this is the Food & Wine page) - all year - Northern Hemisphere Rugby can be seen on the BIG screen (movie theatre sized) at the Holy Grail in Worcester Boulevard (they also do food & wine as you watch). During the winter you can take in a live match at AMI Stadium (was Lancaster Park in the good old days) or watch the youngsters train up to be All Blacks on any local park throughout the NZ Winter ... food and wine not included .. but a heated drink with a little warming tot of something can be provided by The Weston House to thaw the extremities (I understand this is NOT a health food ... but then life is terminal anyway- so enjoy what you have!)
I could go on.....but I think I might be in danger of the 'over-sell'.... but do try our favourite NZ food and Wine website.... Cuisine Magazine - for the latest and the greatest.
